Mechanical polishing

Mechanical polishing can produce a wide variety of aluminium sheet surface finishes and textures, whether it is a rough surface, a patterned matt look or a classic mirror gloss finish. Mechanical polishing can be achieved by various methods such as polishing, sanding, blasting, grinding or tumbling. If aluminium sheet extrusions are to be anodised, mechanical polishing must first be completed. This allows the surface texture produced by mechanical polishing to show through the anodised layer and enhances the appearance of the product. The polishing process also helps to remove small defects from the surface of aluminium alloy sheets.

Grinding polishing

Grinding and polishing is a common mechanical polishing method used to grind hard materials and to reduce tolerances on the surface of the product. In this process a rotary grinder is used and the ground aluminium sheet material is placed on an abrasive wheel or belt attached to it. The rough surface rubs against the metal surface, removing excess material or irregularities. Due to the large amount of heat generated by this process, grinding is carried out at low speeds and a lubricating fluid is used to cool the grinder and the aluminium plate.
