Friction welding of aluminium alloys

Friction welding is a method that uses the heat generated by the mutual movement and friction of the workpiece ends to bring the ends to a thermoplastic state, followed by rapid top forging to complete the weld.

This welding method has not been studied for a long time, being a process proposed in 1991, but it has also been developed very quickly.N. ARODRIRIGUEZ et al. studied friction welding of A319 and A413 aluminium-silicon casting alloys. The experimental results showed a reduction in particle spacing in the weld zone and a corresponding increase in hardness. Ji Yajuan et al. studied the hardness, organisation and mechanical properties of ZL114A aluminium alloy in stir friction welded heads under the conditions of different parameters. The experimental results: the organisation of the weld centre region is a fine equiaxed crystal.

Silicon particles were refined during the welding process and also uniformly covered the entire weld area. The grains of the weld were fine, uniform and dense, and no defects such as porous cracks were observed.
