We are entering a low carbon economy. New business models, IT innovations, decentralised governance and energy efficiency are some of the key words that are redefining our society. Aluminium has an important role to play in driving this shift, what we call the "aluminium effect". Aluminium has the performance characteristics to help build a new society based on low carbon products, lighter vehicles, energy efficient buildings and recycling.

Today, aluminium is the second most widely used metal in the world. This is due to a combination of performance characteristics such as lightness, good extensibility and high resistance to corrosion, which are summarised below.

Corrosion-resistant and durable: aluminium forms a natural oxide layer that protects it from corrosion and makes it virtually maintenance-free. This makes aluminium an ideal material for packaging, construction, vehicles and transport.

Light but strong: despite its relatively low weight, aluminium has a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio. As an alloy, aluminium has properties similar to those of steel and titanium.

Energy efficient: aluminium's unique properties allow for significant energy savings in many applications; for example in vehicles, buildings. In addition, recycled aluminium is highly energy efficient, using only 5% of the energy used for primary production.
