There are two different aluminum alloy numbering systems, and it is a common misconception to assume that these are just two different aluminum classification systems. In fact, there are significant differences between these two types of aluminum, and it's important to understand them.

The number system most of us are familiar with for classifying aluminum alloys is the four-digit system. This is used to classify wrought aluminum alloys as well as many cast plate products. In contrast, alloys used to produce castings use a different classification system, although they also use 4 digits (which can be confusing!) with a decimal between the 3rd and 4th digits. It is important to note that cast alloys usually only list three numbers since the number after the decimal point is usually a zero.

For example, 7075 is a common wrought aluminum alloy, while A380 is a popular cast aluminum alloy (A indicates a modification of the original alloy).

Wrought aluminum is defined as an alloy that has been machined by processes such as rolling, extruding, or forging. In contrast, cast aluminum is formed by pouring molten aluminum into a pattern or mold. The nature of these two processes means that cast aluminum consists of a greater proportion of alloying elements. About 85% of aluminum is used in wrought alloys.
